Enormous Elephant mask from the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon. Elephant masks, worn on the top of the head, were an important part of every ritual dance sequence. The elephant was a royal icon and elephant masks were owned by lineage groups. Their importance was second only to the leader mask and was danced last, in a very stately manner, befitting its high rank.
Great wooden elephant mask. Good condition with a beautiful patina of age. The mask is richly decorated with cauri shells and 50 Koba coins. Contains clear traces of wear and tear. Some cauri shells on top of the mask are missing. One tusk is damaged. Large piece, total length: 94 cm!
