Old wooden helmet mask from the Kwese tribe of Gabon. Helmet masks like these, were worn over the head, or, if too small, on top of the head. The mask appeared during funeral ceremonies. Great use of blue and white pigments.
Old aged patina. Contains clear traces of wear and tear due to aging and tribal use.
Provenance: Justin Barthels (1934-2021), gallery owner Maastricht (NL). Ex owner of a Salampasu mask DR Congo Estimated 60.000 – 90.000 USD by Sotheby`s.
