Initiation mask – Wood – Bembe – DR Congo

Beautiful zoomorphic mask from the BEMBE tribe, former Belgian Congo. This type of mask were worn during the initiation proces.
In Bwami society during circumcision ceremonies, flat face masks are worn, showing typically enlarged concave orbits and bulging coffee-bean eyes. Good condition with a nice aged patina. Zoomorphic mask with large concave orbits, i forms the evocation of a forest spirit.

Provenance: former private collection from the Netherlands. Custom made stand is included in this lot!
